Why a backyard green

Practice at home, every day

A green out the back door turns ten spare minutes into practice. No tee time, no drive to the course, and no grass green to mow and water.

  1. Practice in the time you have.

Before work, after dinner or between calls. The more often you putt, the better your stroke gets, and the green is always right there.

  2. A roll you can trust.

Short, dense putting turf on a smooth, compacted base, with sand infill to set the speed, so the ball rolls the way it does on a course green.

  3. Built for your game.

Cups, breaks and a fringe placed for the putts you want to work on, from short ones you have to make to long lag putts.

  4. No mowing, no watering.

A real grass green needs mowing every few days and water all summer. Turf keeps the same speed and the same color all year.

A place for the whole family to putt, compete and spend time outside, every day of the year.

Custom greens

Design your green

Every green is custom. We measure the space, lay out the shape with you, and build in the features that match how you practice.

Layout

Size and Shape

A small practice green beside the patio or one that fills the backyard, shaped to fit your space, beds and fence line.

Feature

Cups and Flags

As many cups as the green can hold, spaced so you can practice short putts, long putts and everything in between.

Feature

Breaks and Slopes

Breaks are shaped into the base before the turf goes down, from a nearly flat green to putts you have to read.

Feature

Fringe and Collar

A border of longer turf around the green, so it looks like a course green and blends into the rest of the yard.

Feature

Chipping Areas

Longer turf off the green to chip from, so you can work on your short game and not just your putting.

Whole yard

Lawn Around the Green

Turf the rest of the yard in the same project, so the green sits in a lawn that never needs mowing.

Built to roll true

Built to roll true, from the base up

On a putting green, every dip and seam shows up in the roll. We build fields for a living, so every green gets a base that's shaped, compacted and smoothed before the turf goes down.

Cross-section of a backyard putting green install: compacted native soil where the old lawn was removed, a shaped and compacted crushed rock base, a weed barrier, short putting turf with sand infill and longer fringe turf at the edge, a cup set into the base with a flagstick, a golf ball on the green, and a secured edge 451632

  1. Old Lawn Removed

The grass, roots and top layer of soil are dug out and hauled away.

  2. Shaped, Compacted Base

Crushed rock is graded so water drains away, the breaks are shaped in, and it's compacted and smoothed so the green won't shift or settle.

  3. Weed Barrier

A fabric layer that stops weeds from growing up through the green.

  4. Putting Turf

Short, dense turf made for putting on the green, with longer turf for the fringe. We install turf from suppliers including Superior Turf, Rymar Turf and TurfHub.

  5. Cups, Seams and Edges

The cups are set into the base, seams are joined so the ball rolls straight across them, and the edges are secured so nothing lifts.

  6. Sand Infill

Sand is brushed into the turf to hold the blades upright and set the speed of the green.

Two warranties back the install: our workmanship for 1 year, and the turf manufacturer's warranty of up to 25 years.

How it works

From first call to your first putt

One company handles the whole install, so you're not coordinating a removal crew, a base crew and an installer.

  1. First call

Tell us where you want the green, roughly how big, and how you like to practice.

  2. Measure and design

We measure the space, check drainage, sun and access, and lay out the shape, cups, breaks and fringe with you.

  3. Quote

You get a free quote built from the measurements and the design you picked.

  4. Remove and prep

The old grass comes out, and the base goes in, graded, shaped for the breaks, compacted and smoothed.

  5. Install

The putting turf and fringe are laid and seamed, the cups are set, and the sand infill is brushed in.

  6. Walk-through

We roll the first putts with you and show you how to care for the green: brush it, keep leaves and debris off, and top up the sand where it wears. If you'd rather hand it off, maintenance plans start at $0.35 per square foot.

FAQ

Putting green questions

Have a question that isn't here?

How much does a backyard putting green cost?

It depends on the size of the green, how much has to come out, how easy it is to get equipment in, the turf you choose, and features like breaks, extra cups and a chipping fringe. We measure the space and quote it from there. The quote is free.

How big should my putting green be?

Big enough for the putts you want to practice and small enough to fit the yard with room to walk around it. A few cups by the patio works for daily practice; a larger green gives you longer putts and more breaks. We'll lay out options with you on site.

Does it putt like a real green?

Yes. Putting turf has short, dense blades made for a ball to roll on, and the sand infill sets the speed. Because the base is compacted and smoothed before the turf goes down, the ball rolls true instead of wandering over dips and seams.

Can you build breaks and slopes into the green?

Yes. Breaks are shaped into the base before the turf goes down, so you can practice reading putts. Tell us how much break you want and we'll shape it to match, from nearly flat to real reads.

Can I chip onto it?

Yes. We can add a fringe of longer turf around the green to chip from. Tell us you want to chip onto the green and we'll choose a putting turf and infill that hold a chip shot.

How long does an install take?

A small practice green can often be done in a day or two once work starts. A larger green with breaks, a fringe and lawn turf around it takes a few days. Your quote includes a timeline.

What maintenance does a putting green need?

Brush the turf now and then, keep leaves and debris off, and top up the sand where it wears, usually around the cups. There's no mowing or watering. If you'd rather hand it off, maintenance plans start at $0.35 per square foot.

How long does a putting green last, and what's the warranty?

Good turf on a proper base lasts many years. You're covered by two separate warranties: our workmanship for 1 year, and the manufacturer's warranty on the turf, up to 25 years depending on the product.

Where do you install putting greens?

Fort Worth and across the Dallas-Fort Worth area, from our office on Oakland Blvd in Fort Worth.
