Dirt vs. turf

Why convert your dirt mound to turf

A dirt mound needs work before every practice and game to stay in shape. A game turf mound keeps its shape with far less of it.

  • Daily prep

    Dirt mound

Raking, watering, tamping and packing clay before every practice and game.

    Game turf mound

No daily raking, watering or packing clay.

  • The landing area

    Dirt mound

Holes dig in front of the rubber and where pitchers land, and they come back after every outing.

    Game turf mound

The landing area stays smooth with far less upkeep.

  • After rain

    Dirt mound

A wet mound can keep pitchers off it long after the rain stops.

    Game turf mound

Back in use sooner after rain.

  • Day to day

    Dirt mound

Changes with the weather and with how much it's been used.

    Game turf mound

Plays the same from one day to the next.

  • Around the mound

    Dirt mound

Mud and clay get tracked onto the infield.

    Game turf mound

Matches a turf infield and keeps the clay off it.

Know which mounds you want converted?

How it works

From dirt mound to first pitch

One company runs the conversion from start to finish. We take the stress of getting the mound done off your plate, so you can focus on serving athletes.

  1. First call

Tell us about your field: where it is, its size, and whether it's the game mound, the bullpens or both.

  2. Plan

We look at the mound and the ground around it, and help you choose the game turf.

  3. Shape

The dirt mound is shaped to the right height and slope for your field and packed firm, so the turf sits on a solid base.

  4. Turf

Game turf goes over the mound, from suppliers including Superior Turf, Rymar Turf and TurfHub, fitted around the rubber and the landing area.

  5. Finish

The edges are secured and the mound is checked before anyone throws off it.

  6. First pitch

Your pitchers are throwing off a mound that's ready every day.

Who it's for

Mounds built by a pitcher, for pitchers

Our founder, Jackson Jones, grew up in Dallas-Fort Worth playing baseball and pitched four years of college baseball, two at North Lake College and two at East Texas Baptist University. He builds mounds as someone who spent years pitching off them.

For athletic directors, coaches and districts

Schools and ISDs

A turf mound for your game field and bullpens, with work that meets ASTM safety standards. We're fully insured on every build.

For complex and facility owners

Complexes with Several Fields

Dirt mounds across your complex converted one field at a time, each sized to its field, so your staff isn't prepping mounds between games.

FAQ

Pitching mound conversion questions

Have a question that isn't here?

Why convert a dirt mound to turf?

A dirt mound needs raking, watering, tamping and patching to stay in shape, and the holes in front of the rubber and in the landing area come back after every outing. A game turf mound cuts most of that work, is back in use sooner after rain, and plays the same from one day to the next.

Does a turf mound still need upkeep?

Far less than a dirt mound. There's no daily raking, watering or packing clay. Ask us what your turf mound needs to stay in good shape, and we'll walk you through it.

Which mounds do you convert?

Game mounds on full 60/90 fields, mounds on youth fields, and bullpen mounds. Each one is sized to your field.

How much does a pitching mound conversion cost?

It depends on how many mounds you're converting, their size, the condition of the dirt mound, and the game turf you choose. Every field is different, so we quote yours from your field and your plans. The quote is free.

How long does a mound conversion take?

It depends on how many mounds you're converting, what we find when we start, and the weather. Ask for a quote and we'll give you a timeline for your field.

Can you replace our infield turf at the same time?

We replace worn infield turf too, on every size of field from youth diamonds to full 60/90s, and we can talk through doing both when you call. Ask about it in your quote request.

What about a mound for a batting cage or an indoor facility?

Where a built-in mound doesn't fit, like a cage, a bullpen inside a building or an open facility floor, we set up Portolite portable pitching mounds and mats.

What warranty comes with a turf mound?

Two separate warranties. Our workmanship is covered for 1 year. The turf carries the manufacturer's warranty, up to 25 years depending on the product.

Where do you convert pitching mounds?

Anywhere in Texas, from our home base in Fort Worth, including the Dallas-Fort Worth area. We also take field projects in surrounding states.
